From the Britwriters
This is the new and currently slightly bare blog of a group of British writers. All of us are published mainly in the USA, so our daily lives are lived in two countries, with a foot in both cultures. Most of our peers and most of our readers are American, and this makes life fascinating, rewarding and occasionally perplexing. We banded together just in order to have friends and colleagues who understood what it was like. But once we did, we thought ‘this is an interesting position we find ourselves in. Why not blog about it?’ Hence the Britwriters blog.
This will be – we hope – an interesting blog to match. We’re aiming to talk about writing – our own personal novels, our experience in the hectic world of publishing and the art of writing itself. But we’ll also be posting about British and American similarities and differences. We’ll have tips on how – if you’re an American writer – you can make a novel set in Britain sound authentic, whether that’s for contemporary or historical novels. We may even hold question and answer sessions
I’m sure there will be at least one post on the fraught subject of spelling! And we’ll probably be posting about where we went and what we saw at the weekends, because there’s a lot of local colour out there to explore, and you never know what might be your latest inspiration.

Wow, this looks great. Do you have any poets in your group?
You know, I’m not sure! I think we do, but not everyone who is in the group is always active at the same time. I will go away and find out
Hee! Thanks for being our first comment ever!
Hi Kerri,
I do dabble in poetry and some of the others write more seriously than I do.
But on the whole, I’d say we were fiction writers first.

I do a little (badly though I might add), my partner writes it mainly but I can never get him around to publishing any!
I think as Ansley said on the whole we are all fiction writers first. if the muse hits us that way a poem might appear – in fact some of my sudden fiction pieces (short fiction below 1000 words) have been reclassified as poems by people I know so I suppose it’s a subjective thing.
I’ll stop babbling now!
Looking forward to seeing you around here again.
Nicole
Great idea – I’m all for it! I think most of my gay fan base is in the States too!

Wonderful, Anne! I’ve been meaning to advertise it around and ask people to join, but haven’t quite got round to it yet. I’m beginning to think that we’ll have to have an attached yahoo group to do the behind the scenes organization of who will post when.
Do you have a WP blog or username already? If so, give me a nod and I will add you to the WP blog as a contributor. If not, tell me which email address you would like to use and I can send an invitation to you asap
This is a brilliant idea! I have three books (one is part of an anthology) to be published by The Wild Rose Press in the US. in the near future. Although I am on lots of US loops and forums, it would be great to be able to interact with more UK authors in the same position. I know a couple of other Brits who are published with TWRP and I’ll let them know about this blog. (I was given the details of Britwriters one of my fellow anthology writers.
Thanks for starting this, I think you’re filling a much-needed ‘gap in the market’.

I guess as the others said, I ‘dabble’ in poetry now and then, although I’d very much like to write more. I’ve a few pieces of poetry published but I like writing stories most of all.
It’s nice to have a place to get together with other British writers. Sometimes just that pesky difference in time zone makes you feel isolated. If I’m early to a promotional chat I feel as if I’m talking to myself. LOL.
Hello!
This looks a fascinating site, full of potential. As Lyn says, it fills a much-needed ‘gap in the market’.
I’m a British writer published in both the USA and the UK. My latest novel, an English medieval historical romance, A KNIGHT’S VOW, has been published this year by the USA publishers Kensington. I’m also being published later this year in e-book form by Siren-BookStrand with a historical romance, FLAVIA’S SECRET, set in 206AD (Roman Britain).
I think this site could be a very useful place for writers with a British interest to make friends, ask questions and exchange information.
I wish you lots of luck with it!
Best wishes, Lindsay Townsend
Thanks Lyn! Yes, there just isn’t the network in place in the UK that there is in the USA – no RWA chapters and so on. If we can all get together then perhaps we can help each other to promote our books, send representatives to what conventions and festivals there are, and generally have a bit more oomph behind us
For ease of communication, could you join the yahoo group? That’s here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/The_Britwriters/
and yes, do spread the word around! That would be great
Thank you!
Thanks Lindsay! If you’re at all interested in being involved yourself, then I suggest you join the yahoo group
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/The_Britwriters/
which is where we’ll be doing all the organization of the thing. After that I can send you an invitation which will set you up as a contributor to this blog.
I’m afraid it’s all a bit of a turmoil at the moment – early days, you know – but once we’ve got people on board and sorted out, it should be a good thing
This blog looks interesting, I’ll save it to my favourites.
I’m an Australian author but most of my books are set in England, as I lived there for 3 years and my family is all from Yorkshire.
I’ll come back again.
Thanks Anne! Yes, I’m hoping it will be useful for anyone who wants to write fiction set in England. I’m wondering if we could run a weekly question and answer session as well, for people who desperately needed to know the price of milk or whatever for a story.
